Poetry as Meditation

An Interview with David Whyte

The other night, while scrolling through the typical babble of YouTube, I happened upon this video—old yet timeless—which resonated with me deeply and inspired me to share it. I was unfamiliar with David Whyte, as you may be as well, so I have attached a brief bio below. I hope you enjoy.

David Whyte, born in 1955 to an Irish mother and Yorkshire father, grew up in South Yorkshire with a deep connection to Irish poetry. He studied marine zoology at Bangor University, conducting research in the Galapagos Islands and leading expeditions in the Amazon, Andes, and Himalayas. His poetry career began in 1986, following the publication of "Songs for Coming Home" and his move to Whidbey Island, Washington. Whyte has since worked with organizations like NASA, AT&T, Boeing, and Toyota, blending his life sciences background with his poetic work. His collections, including "Where Many Rivers Meet" and "River Flow," reflect his profound connection to nature. Whyte has authored seven poetry volumes, three prose books, and numerous audiobooks.
